Getting In Tune With Your Body

Do you find yourself reading article after article only to find they have completely conflicting information? I have this problem. I’m a huge nerd and I love to read anything I can get my hands on pertaining to fitness, nutrition, wellness, etc. In reading all of this information I found it’s really like anything else….you can find a group, book, or article that supports just about any theory out there. So how in the world are you supposed to know what works? Am I supposed to eat three meals or five meals a day? Am I supposed to lift light weights with lots of reps or heavy weights with low reps? Should I avoid carbs at all costs and eat only meat, or is my body incapable of digesting meat?

I was so frustrated by this, it was in part what inspired me to become a certified personal trainer. I just knew that with the certification would come the key to all the information I so desperately wanted. Guess what? No magic key. Just more information. Ugh! So FRUSTRATING.

 I actually have learned something through all of my research and studying, however. Fitness and nutrition are like anything else; you have to find what works for you. I compare it to skin care or make up (you girls can relate to this). I’ve had friends rave about a product and after trying it, realized it just wasn’t that impressive to me.

Fitness and nutrition are much the same way. Maybe eating five small meals works for your bff, but three meals works better for you. Guess what? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It may take some trial and error for you to figure out what works for YOUR body, but if you are committed, you can discover what works best. You have to listen to your body – see how it responds to certain things. What you shouldn’t do is try something just because some article or book says you should. For each book that tells you carbs are bad, there are ten more that explain why they’re okay (and vice versa).

In my opinion, there is no right or wrong way to be healthy. There is the way your body best responds. Obviously a healthy diet and exercise are imperative. However, when you eat, how much you lift, how much cardio you need depends on how your body responds.

Really listen to your body. Educate yourself. If something is not working, discover alternate methods that do. If something is working, why try changing just because there’s a new fad? I’m not saying don’t shake things up. Variety is the spice of life, after all. What I am saying is be smart about it. Don’t waste your time on things that don’t work for you. Make small changes and tweaks to discover how your body responds. Once you are in tune with your body, you’ll be amazed at what you’ll learn.
